Dunn makes history by winning No. 1 singles championship

MADISON, Wis. -- Ryan Dunn joined some select company in Lawrence University tennis history on Saturday.

The sophomore from Fond du Lac, Wis., became just the fourth player in Lawrence history to win a No. 1 singles title at the Midwest Conference Championships. Dunn beat Grinnell College's Dan LaFountaine 6-1, 7-6 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Dunn, who avenged a loss earlier this season to LaFountaine, is the first Lawrence player to win the top singles flight since Pat Kenney did it in 1968. Dick Rine won at No. 1 singles in 1955 and 1957, and John Schmerein won a pair of top singles titles in 1938 and 1939.

Dunn had to go three sets in both the quarterfinals and semifinals. He beat Monmouth College's Kyle Korb 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the quarters and then topped Knox College's Jared Katchen 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 in the semis.

In other action for the Vikings, Dan Hertel reached the championship semifinals at No. 3 before falling to Lake Forest College's Jon Flaksman 6-4, 6-4.

David Klaus won the consolation title at No. 6 with a 10-8 win over Carroll College's Adam Knoelke. At Nos. 4 and 5, respectively, Travis Fondow and Kyle Nodarse were eliminated in consolation semifinals. Nick Dufficy lost in the championship quarterfinals at No. 2 singles.

In the doubles competition, the No. 1 team of Dunn and Hertel fell in a three-set match to Monmouth's Kevin Kamenjarin and Korb 6-2, 4-6, 7-6. At No. 2 doubles, Travis Fondow and Lincoln Thomas advanced to the consolation semifinals before being eliminated. At No. 3, Kyle Nodarse and Nick Dufficy were eliminated by Lake Forest's Joe Campagna and Chris Paterakos in the championship semifinals 6-2, 6-3.
