Vatch breaks trio of records; Lloyd wins Coach of the Year honors

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University standout Hayley Vatch broke a trio of records on the final day of the Midwest Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, and led the Vikings to a second-place finish in the team standings.

Lawrence interim head coach Dan Lloyd was named women's Coach of the Year in what will be his only season with the Vikings. Julia Ziege and Kyle Griffin also captured individual titles for Lawrence.

Vatch broke the school, MWC Championships, and Boldt Natatorium records in the 1,650-yard freestyle. She won the event in 17:49.25, taking the title for the second consecutive season. Vatch broke her own school record, topped the meet record of 17:55.58 set in 2001 by Grinnell's Jenn Holm, and broke the pool record of 17:54.47.

Vatch, a junior from Elmhurst, Ill., also defended her title in the 500 freestyle with a winning time of 5:14.47.

Ziege claimed the other title for the Lawrence women. The sophomore from Madison, Wis., won the 100 backstroke in 1:01.83 for her first conference championship. The Lawrence women finished with 766 points, with Grinnell winning the title with 1,303.

Griffin, a junior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, won his first conference championship when he swam to victory in the 1,650 freestyle in 16:58.32. Led by Griffin, the Vikings placed fourth in the team standings.
