Borresen, Mays to join Lawrence basketball team

APPLETON, Wis. -- Erik Borresen and Jon Mays will attend Lawrence University in the fall and plan to join the men's basketball team for the 2007-08 season.

Borresen, a 6-foot-8 center, is from Living Word Lutheran High School in Jackson, Wis., and Mays, a 6-3 guard, is from Jefferson High School in Bloomington, Minn.

Borresen, who lives in West Bend, Wis., averaged 19 points and 11.5 rebounds per game last season. He earned All-Midwest Classic Conference first-team honors for the second consecutive season

"To get someone of Erik's size at this level is outstanding," Lawrence head coach Joel DePagter said. "He is just a perfect fit with our team, and he is exactly what we needed. We're lucky to have him at Lawrence."

Borresen, who participated in the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Classic, led his team to a 15-7 record in 2006-07.

Mays earned All-Lake Conference honors while averaging 12 points per game for Bloomington Jefferson, which qualified for the Minnesota State AAAA Tournament and finished with a 23-6 record. Mays, a prep teammate of University of Kansas recruit Cole Aldrich, also is an outstanding student and earned honorable mention on the academic all-state team.

"Jon is a very versatile, athletic player who will be able to play a variety of positions," DePagter said. "With the type of student he is and player he is, he's a good fit for Lawrence."

Lawrence returns 17 letterwinners from a team that finished 13-10 a season ago and opens the 2007-08 campaign with an exhibition game at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay on Nov. 5.
