Lawrence student-athletes recognized at 2007 Honors Celebration

APPLETON, Wis. -- Fourteen Lawrence University student-athletes were recognized for their achievements at the 2007 Honors Celebration.

The awards and winners follow.

The Ruth Bateman Award is given for excellence in scholarship, athletic ability, and leadership by a woman athlete. Senior Stephanie Kliethermes (Elmhurst, Ill./York) won for her strong academic performance, outstanding leadership of the Lawrence University Community Council and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and her dedication to the women's basketball, volleyball, and indoor and outdoor track teams.

The Iden Charles Champion Cup is given for excellence in scholarship, athletic ability, college spirit, and loyalty. Senior John Budi (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) was recognized for his success as a wrestler and a student-athlete. Budi won 100 matches in his career and was a three-time NCAA Division III Scholar All-American.

The Arthur C. Denney Trophy is given to the track man who has outstanding team spirit and leadership and has socred the greatest number of points during the season. Senior David Quinlan (Appleton, Wis./North) won the award and competed in middle distance events for the Vikings.

The Outstanding Freshman Athletic Award for Women is given to the freshman woman who has made the most outstanding contribution to Lawrence athletics. Lucy Bouressa (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna) was a starter in both volleyball and softball during her freshman year.

The Oustanding Freshman Athletic Award for Men is given to the freshman male who has made the most outstanding contribution to Lawrence athletics. Sam Laes (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) became the first male student-athlete at Lawrence since 2000-01 to participate in three sports. Laes was a reserve defensive back and special teams player in football, the starter at 165 pounds on the wrestling team, and a reserve outfielder on the baseball team.

The Bernard E. Heselton Award was established in 1981 by friends and relatives in memory of Bernie Heselton, who coached and served as director of athletics at Lawrence from 1938-71, and is given to the most dedicated graduating senior football player. Tyler Krzewina (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna), a linebacker, was a four-time All-Midwest Conference selection and earned All-West Region honors during his senior season.

The Ralph V. Landis Award was established by the Lettermen of Lawrence in honor of Dr. Landis, physician to Lawrence students from 1926-78, and is awarded for outstanding contributions to Lawrence athletics by a senior male athlete. Senior Brad Hauser (Appleton, Wis./East) was a three-time All-Midwest Conference selection in baseball and served as captain of the team. A fixture at all Lawrence sporting events, he also served as an assistant in the sports information office.

The Letterwinner Award is presented by the L Club to those outstanding seniors who have earned eight or more letters. The winners are:
Molly Bouressa (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna), basketball and softball;
Colleen Detjens (Lisle, Ill./Lisle), cross country and indoor and outdoor track;
Mitch Goodman (Derby, Kan./Derby), cross country and indoor and outdoor track;
Kelsey Grubbs (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Burlingame), cross country and indoor and outdoor track;
Phil Keith (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South), cross country and indoor and outdoor track;
Stephanie Kliethermes (Elmhurst, Ill./York), basketball, indoor and outdoor track, and volleyball;
Ryan Knox (Milton, Wis./Milton), basketball and golf;
Tim O'Toole (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville), football and baseball;
David Quinlan (Appleton, Wis./North), cross country, indoor and outdoor track, and wrestling.

The Charles E. Pond Award for Men is given for all-around athletic ability by a senior man in two or more sports and for sportsmanship, school spirit, and scholarship. Phil Keith (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) was recognized for his outstanding academic performance and his contributions as a team leader in cross country and track and field.

The Pond Award for Women is given for all-around athletic ability by a senior woman in two or more sports and for sportsmanship, school spirit, and scholarship. Molly Bouressa (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna) was recognized for her dedication to academics, her contributions to the athletic program as captain of both the softball and basketball teams, and her service as a student athletic trainer.

The Marion Read Award is given for outstanding contributions to Lawrence athletics. Senior Stephanie Kliethermes (Elmhurst, Ill./York) won for her contributions for the basketball, volleyball, and indoor and outdoor track teams, as well as her leadership of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Founded in 1847, Lawrence University has produced seven Rhodes Scholars and was again named one of the country's "best national liberal arts colleges" by U.S. News and World Report in its 2006-07 Guide to American Colleges.
