APPLETON, Wis. -- Seven Lawrence University baseball players have been chosen
for the All-Midwest Conference North Division team, with the Vikings picking
up four first-team selections.
Pitcher Kevin Kangas, outfielders Brad Hauser and Tim O'Toole and designated hitter Ben Webster all made the first team, with pitcher Chris Clouthier, first baseman Tommy Schmidt and second baseman Hawk Haiduke earning second-team honors.
Kangas (Chassell, Mich./Chassell), a senior left-hander, went 3-0 in the conference with a 2.65 earned run average. He struck out 37 and walked 12 in 34 innings and MWC teams hit only .231 against him. He finished 4-3 on the season with a school-record 2.53 ERA. Kangas struck out 71 and walked 23 in 57 innings.
Hauser (Appleton, Wis./East) earned all-conference honors for the third time in his career and made the first time for the second consecutive season. The center fielder batted .400 in league play with four doubles, two homers and 11 runs batted in. He finished the season with a .365 batting average and had five doubles, a pair of homers and 15 RBIs. He also was a perfect 5-for-5 on stolen bases.
O'Toole (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) sparked the offense from the lead-off
spot and was named to the all-conference first-team for the second time. He
batted .324 in the conference with four doubles, two triples, a homer and seven
RBIs. He also scored 14 runs and swiped six bases. On the season, he hit .376
with seven doubles, three triples, three homers and 12 RBIs. He led the team
with a .594 slugging percentage, 23 runs scored and 12 stolen bases. O'Toole
finished with 59 career steals to break the Lawrence record.
Webster (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) finished fourth in the league with
a .438 batting average and fourth with a .771 slugging percentage. The junior
was honored on the all-conference team for the first time after smacking four
doubles and four homers and driving in 18 runs. On the season, he hit .353 with
six doubles, four homers and 23 RBIs.
Schmidt (Two Rivers, Wis./Mishicot), a sophomore, was named to the team for the second consecutive season after hitting .400 with four doubles, four homers, 16 RBIs and a team-high 15 runs scored while compiling a .691 slugging percentage. Schmidt, who earned National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and MWC Player of the Week honors in 2007, finished the season with a .330 batting average, six doubles, a triple, five homers and a team-high 25 RBIs.
Clouthier (Appleton, Wis./Xavier), a senior lefty, earned all-conference honors
for the second time in his career. He was only 1-3 in league play despite a
sparking 3.42 ERA. Clouthier struck out 12 and walked eight in 26.1 innings.
Overall, he finished 3-5 with a 3.78 ERA, with 22 strikeouts and 15 walks in
52.1 innings.
Haiduke (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) earned his first all-conference honor after hitting .406 in league play with three doubles,
a triple, three homers and a team-high 21 RBIs. The sophomore also had a .625
slugging percentage. On the season, he led the team with a .377 batting average
and pounded out four doubles, a triple, three homers and 22 RBIs.
Lawrence finished the season with a 12-21 record and finished third in the North Division of the conference with a 6-10 mark.
