Lawrence's Schmidt wins national Player of the Week honors

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University standout Tommy Schmidt has been named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Player of the Week after posting some huge numbers from May 3-5.

In four games against Carroll College, Schmidt batted a blistering .750, going 12-for-16 with three doubles, two homers and nine runs batted in. A sophomore first baseman, Schmidt scored eight runs while compiling a .789 on-base percentage and an astounding 1.313 slugging percentage.

The Two Rivers, Wis., native and former standout at Mishicot High School started his week by going 4-for-4 with a double, a homer and three RBIs in Lawrence's 10-0 victory in the series opener. He also went 1-for-2 in the nightcap of that doubleheader, a 4-3 Lawrence win.

In game three of the series, a 15-14 Lawrence win, Schmidt went 2-for-5 with a double and three runs scored. In the series finale, Schmidt tied the school record for hits in a game by going 5-for-5 with a double, a homer, three runs scored and six RBIs.

Schmidt is the only player from the Midwest Conference to be honored by the NCBWA this season and only the third player from Wisconsin to be chosen in 2007.

Schmidt finished his season with a .330 batting average, and he had six doubles, a triple and paced the team with five homers and 25 RBIs.
