Five Vikings named to all-conference softball squad

APPLETON, Wis. -- Five Lawrence University softball players have been chosen for the All-Midwest Conference team, led by first-team selections Catherine Marinac, Alex Goodson, and Jenna Reichel.

Toren Johnson and Carrie Van Groll were chosen for the second team.

Marinac (St. Paul, Minn./Central), a junior pitcher, was named to the first team for the second consecutive year. Marinac, who was the North Division Pitcher of the Year as a sophomore, was 6-6 in the league with a 2.31 earned run average. She struck out a league-best 44 and walked 27 in 78.2 innings pitched. She was 13-10 overall with a 2.63 ERA.

Goodson (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield), a freshman utility player, led all North Division players with a .488 batting average, six doubles, and five homers. She led the entire league with 23 runs batted in and two triples. Goodson's prodigious power led her to a 1.098 slugging percentage. On the season, Goodson hit .420 with 10 doubles and four triples, and she set school season records with seven homers and 43 RBIs.

Reichel (Madison Lake, Minn./Mankato East), a sophomore third baseman, sparked the Lawrence offense from the lead-off spot. Reichel, a second-team all-conference pick last season, batted .419 in league play and scored a team-high 15 runs. She also was 3-for-3 on stolen base attempts. Reichel led the team with a .426 batting average on the season and had a pair of doubles and 11 RBIs to go with her team-high 36 runs scored, which was eighth-best in the nation in runs per game. She also swiped 15 bases in 16 tries this season.

Johnson (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) was named to the all-conference team for the second consecutive year after earning first-team honors a season ago. The senior centerfielder/second baseman hit .326 in the league with three doubles and five RBIs. She batted .367 on the season with four doubles, two triples and 20 RBIs.

Van Groll (Kaukauna, Wis./Little Chute) earned all-conference honors for the first time after moving from second base to shortstop this season. The junior hit .368 in league play with a double, two homers and 13 RBIs. On the season, Van Groll batted .349 with a double, a triple, four homers and 22 RBIs.

Lawrence finished with a 15-12 record and took third place in the North Division of the conference.
