APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's tennis team won a pair of consolation titles and finished seventh in the team standings at the Midwest Conference Championships at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis.
Nick Dufficy won the consolation crown at No. 1 singles, and Dan Hertel and Travis Fondow took the consolation title at No. 1 doubles.
Dufficy lost in the first round but came back to beat Lake Forest's Tim Tierney 10-8 and Carroll's John Krewer 10-3 in the consolation round. Hertel and Fondow also lost in the opening round but won a pair of consolation matches by identical 10-5 scores. The Lawrence duo knocked off Krewer and Andy Prentice of Carroll and then beat Knox's Lance Hoffman and Jared Katchen for the consolation title.
In the other singles action, Hertel was eliminated after losing his first two matches at No. 2. Kyle Nodarse won a preliminary round match but was eliminated by St. Norbert's Adrian Acosta in the first round at No. 3. It was the same for Fondow at No. 4. He beat Ripon's Dan Weiler 7-6, 6-2, in the preliminaries but was eliminated by Lake Forest's Joel Hainsfurther. Phil Roy beat Beloit's Grisha Grigoriev 6-2, 6-4 in a preliminary match but was ousted by St. Norbert's Chris Schmitz in the first round. Lincoln Thomas lost his opening-round match and was then eliminated by Knox's Clark Smith in a consolation match.
At No. 2 doubles, Nodarse and Dufficy shut out Ripon's Alex Tessman and Jacob Knaapen 6-0, 6-0 in the preliminaries but were eliminated in straight sets by Monmouth's Brian Jordan and Kevin Kamenjarin. Roy and Thomas lost their first-round match at No. 3 doubles and were eliminated by Smith and Jim Michaux of Knox in a consolation match.
Lawrence finished with 15 points, and Grinnell won the title.
