Lawrence sweeps weekly conference softball awards

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University softball stars Alex Goodson and Catherine Marinac won the Midwest Conference weekly awards.

Goodson was named Player of the Week and Marinac was named Pitcher of the Week.

Goodson, a freshman from Plainfield, Ill., batted .600 on the week, tied one school record, and is closing in on another. She was 9-for-15 with three doubles, a triple, two homers, and 10 runs batted in, which translates into a 1.333 slugging percentage.

In Lawrence's 14-1 and 11-7 doubleheader sweep of Carroll College, the former Plainfield High School standout was 7-for-9 with two doubles, a triple, and a two-run homer. Lawrence swept Finlandia University 4-3 and 6-5 the following day, as Goodson went 3-for-6 with a double and a homer.

The homer against Finlandia gave Goodson six for the season, which ties the school season record set by Tracie Spangenberg in 1987. Goodson, who is batting .422 on the season, now has 35 RBIs, two shy of tying Jenny Batog's 1999 season record of 37.

Goodson is among the national leaders in home runs, RBIs, and triples per game.

Marinac, a junior from St. Paul, Minn., went 4-0 on the week, winning three starts and picking up another win in relief. A former standout at St. Paul Central High School, Marinac pitched 25 innings on the week, struck out 19, and walked two.

She tossed a pair of complete games in Lawrence's sweep of Carroll. Marinac allowed only three hits in the opener against Carroll and then struck out seven without walking a batter in the nightcap.

Marinac allowed only one earned run in the opening win against Finlandia and then tossed two innings of scoreless relief to pick up the victory in the nightcap.

Marinac, the 2006 North Division Pitcher of the Year, is 11-5 this season with a 2.14 earned run average. She has struck out 73 and walked 24 in 91 2/3 innings.

Lawrence returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Ripon College for a Midwest Conference doubleheader.
