Three Viking softball players named to All-Region team

APPLETON, WIS. - Three Lawrence University softball players have been namd to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Great Lakes Region team. Senior Becca Peglow and freshman Jenny Burris earned second-team honors, and freshman Shannon Arendt was selected for the third team.

Peglow, a catcher from Minnestrista, Minn., saved her best season for last. The former star at Mound-Westonka High School hit .271 this season and batted .333 in Midwest Conference play. Peglow finished the season with three doubles and 15 runs batted in.

Peglow led the team in fielding for the second time in her career, finishing with a 1.000 fielding percentage. She didn't commit an error this season and had just five in her career despite starting all four years behind the plate. Peglow also played a key role in developing a young pitching staff. With virtually no experienced pitchers back from a season ago, the Vikings still managed to post a team earned run average of 3.82.

Burris, a shortstop from Gurnee, Ill, enjoyed a record-breaking season. The former standout at Warren Township High School led the team in batting average, runs, hits, doubles, triples, RBIs, total bases, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, and stolen bases.

Burris hit a robust .440 and broke the school season records for hits with 51 (the previous record was 47), triples with seven (six), runs scored with 37 (34), total bases with 79 (68), and stolen bases with 26 (23). She also had 11 doubles, one homer, and 21 RBIs. Burris, who started every game at shortstop this season, had a .681 slugging percentage and .489 on-base percentage.

Arendt, a native of Hortonville, formed the other half of Lawrence's freshmen double-play combination. The former star at Hortonville High School started every game at second base and was third on the team with a .358 batting average. Arendt finished the season with nine doubles, one triple, one home run, and 18 RBIs. She compiled a .486 slugging percentage and a .407 on-base percentage.

Arendt also played a superb defensive second base. She handled 157 chances and made just six errors for a .962 fielding percentage.
