New Faculty Dean, International Programs Director Named at Lawrence
University
APPLETON, WIS. -- A French literature scholar and a specialist in
experiential education have been named to administrative positions at
Lawrence University.
Gerald Seaman, chair of the department of foreign languages at the
University of Evansville, has been named associate dean of the faculty.
Andrew Law, who has more than 10 years experience in study-abroad
programs and international education, has been appointed Lawrence's
director of international and off-campus programs. Seaman assumes his
new position Aug. 1, while Law will join the college in early September.
"Both Gerald Seaman and Andrew Law bring to Lawrence top-flight
academic backgrounds, experience in a liberal arts environment and
enthusiasm for the mission and programs of the university," said Brian
Rosenberg, dean of the faculty, in announcing the appointments. "I
expect both to be important and energetic contributors to our collective
efforts."
Seaman joined the University of Evansville faculty in 1992 as an
assistant professor of French. He was named chair of the department of
foreign languages in 1997 and promoted to the rank of associate
professor last year.
A Wisconsin native who grew up in Madison, Seaman has been
published in national and international journals and was the recipient
of a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship in 1994. This
past spring, he was named the recipient of Evansville's Mortar Board
Professor of the Year award for 1999-2000.
He earned his bachelor's degree in political science, international
studies and French at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his
master's degree and Ph.D. in French literature at Stanford University.
Seaman's areas of responsibility will include faculty mentoring and
development, grant support and instructional technology. He will
coordinate Lawrence's Sexual Harassment and Assault Resource Board and
chair the committee on instruction.
Law is currently working as an independent consultant and
researcher in Minneapolis after spending two years as the coordinator of
off-campus study at Macalester College. Prior to that, he spent six
years in the foreign studies and the exchange programs at the University
of Minnesota. He also taught in the university's American studies
program.
Originally from Washington, D.C., Law earned his bachelor's degree
in American studies at Georgetown University and his doctorate in
American studies at the University of Minnesota.
At Lawrence, Law will coordinate student participation in the
nearly 30 off-campus programs Lawrence offers, either individually or through the
Associated Colleges of the Midwest consortium. He also will oversee
Lawrence's London Center in England and develop and direct an annual
program of weekend seminars for students at Bjorklunden, Lawrence's
"northern campus" in Baileys Harbor.
