Wriston Art Center Galleries present "Painted Music: Kandinsky,
Schönberg and the Art of the Abstract"
APPLETON, WIS. -- Timothy Riley will present the lecture, "Painted
Music: Kandinsky, Schonberg, and the Art of the Abstract," in
conjunction with the Wriston Art Center Galleries exhibition, "Modernist
Prints 1900-1955." Scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in
Lawrence University's Wriston Art Center auditorium, the talk will
explore the close relationship between artist Wassily Kandinsky and
composer Arnold Schönberg.
Riley will focus on the years 1911-1924, a time when both artists'
creative innovations had a profound impact on the course of 20th-century
art. From their initial correspondence through their first meeting, to
their participation and collaboration in "Der Blaue Reiter Almanach,"
the gallery talk will examine letters, articles, compositions and works
of art in an effort to understand the considerable influence each artist
had on the other. The presentation will feature a slide lecture,
discussions of primary source readings and musical examples. It will
conclude with an examination of the three Kandinsky prints currently on
exhibition in the Wriston Art Center Galleries.
A 1992 graduate of Lawrence, where he earned a bachelor of arts
degree in art history, Riley has lectured extensively on a variety of
topics, including the complementary aspects of medieval art and music.
He is a former education assistant and concert coordinator at the
Metropolitan Museum of Art/The Cloisters in New York.
"Modernist Prints 1900-1955" continues through Nov. 21, 1999.
Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and noon to
4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The galleries are handicapped accessible
and open to the public free of charge. The Wriston Art Center is
located at 613 E. College Ave., Appleton. For additional information,
