Milwaukee Arts Magazine Founder, Editor Named Curator at Lawrence
University


     APPLETON, WIS. -- Frank Lewis, an art magazine editor and long-time
art educator, has been named curator of Lawrence University's Wriston
Art Center Art Gallery.  He will assume his responsibilities at the
gallery Aug. 21.
     Lewis founded Art Muscle magazine in 1986 and served as the first
editor of the former bimonthly arts publication.  Since 1992, he has
been the editor of Metalsmith, a magazine devoted to art works in metal.
In addition, he has previously served as the Wisconsin editor of The New
Art Examiner and wrote more than 120 reviews as an art critic for the
Milwaukee Sentinel from 1982-90.
     A native of Petersburg, Va., Lewis, 47, has taught art classes at
the post secondary level for more than 15 years and is currently an
instructor in the art departments of both UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee.
During his career he also has taught at the University of Chicago,
Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Northwestern University,
UW-Parkside and the Art Institute of Chicago.
     A specialist in modern art and contemporary theory and criticism,
Lewis served as acting director of the UW-Milwaukee Art Museum in 1996
and was the associate curator of exhibitions at the Kohler Arts Center
in Sheboygan from 1989-90.
     Lewis earned his bachelor's degree in literature at Emory and Henry
College, his master's degree in art history at the University of Chicago
and is pursuing his doctorate there as well.
     As Wriston Art Center curator, Lewis will be responsible for the
maintenance of Lawrence's permanent collections as well as the planning
and installation of all exhibitions.
