Two Lawrence University Students Selected for National Science Awards
APPLETON, WIS. -- Two Lawrence University physics majors have been
named recipients of a prestigious national academic fellowship.
Angela Kopp, Tomahawk, and Cindy Regal, Duluth, Minn., have been
awarded $7,500 scholarships by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and
Excellence in Education Foundation. The Goldwater Scholarship is the
country's premier undergraduate award for students pursuing careers in
the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering.
Both juniors, Kopp and Regal were selected on the basis of strong
academic merit from a field of 1,176 nominees from more than 500
colleges and universities around the country. A total of 309
scholarships were awarded for the 2000-2001 academic year. Lawrence,
UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee were the only Wisconsin institutions with a
Goldwater Scholarship recipient.
Kopp and Regal become the fourth and fifth Lawrence students in the
12-year history of the program to be named Goldwater Scholars. This is
the first time Lawrence has been awarded more than one scholarship in
the same year.
