Live Music, Interactive Information Highlight Lawrence University Earth
Day Festival

APPLETON, WIS. -- Lawrence University commemorates Earth Day with
its second annual "Reduce Use Earth Festival" Saturday, April 22. The
day-long ecological extravaganza features interactive educational
presentations, a "swap" meet, a float parade/competition by Appleton
elementary students and live music.
Members of Greenfire, Lawrence's student environmental awareness
organization, and area volunteers kick off the festival at 9 a.m. with a
trash cleanup of the banks of the Fox River near the Lawrence campus
An "Earth Day Swap Meet/Reusable Market Place" will be held in the
Buchanan Kiewit Recreation Center, where gently-used goods such as
books, clothing, sports equipment, toys, decorations, pet supplies,
tools and dishes, among other items, can be bought or traded. The swap
meet runs from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
More than a dozen area experts will provide environmental-related
information throughout the afternoon on topics ranging from organic
farming and low-impact camping to ecologically-friendly arts and crafts.
An educational outreach component of the festival will feature
students from Appleton schools participating in a parade of "wagon"
floats designed around the theme of "Wisconsinıs Environmental Issues."
Participating schools will be given trees to plant in recognition of the
students' efforts.
Blues and folk music guitarist Joe Price performs from 1-2:30 p.m.
and The Big Wu, a Minnesota-based band takes the stage at 4 p.m. to play
its unique fusion of bluegrass, rock, jazz, and R&B elements.
