Lawrence University Student Musicians Earn High Honors in Area Competitions
APPLETON, WIS. -- Paul Weber, a senior at Lawrence University, won the
American Guild of Organists competition held Saturday, April 10 in St. Paul,
Minn.
A 1995 graduate of Appleton West High School, Weber received $1,000 for
his first-place performance and qualified for the guild's regional
competition in Omaha, Neb., in July.
A student of professors George Damp and Wolfgang Rubsam, Weber
performed works by Bach and Messiaen as well as one of his own original
compositions.
Also on Saturday, April 10, the Lawrence University Saxophone Quartet
was awarded second-place honors in the annual Neale-Silva Young Artists
competition in Madison. Sponsored by Wisconsin Public Radio, the Neale-Silva
competition is open to musicians aged 17-30 who are either from Wisconsin or
attend a Wisconsin college. Lawrence music students had won the competition
each of the past two years.
The quartet, which received $500 in prize money, performed works by
Elliott Del Borgo and Henry Purcell, which was recorded and later broadcast
Sunday morning on WPR's classical music program.
Members of the saxophone quartet are seniors Lisa Rhoades, Beaverton,
Ore., Paul Synder, Menomonee Falls, and Ben Zabor, Hiram, Ohio, and
junior Jessica Wiggins, Alexandria, La. All four are students of
Professor Steven Jordheim.
