Soul Coughing will feature their latest album El Oso, a title that
may have been partially inspired by the bear on the California state
flag although rumors abound of bears appearing on Soul Coughing's set
lists. As jungle beats dominate, El Oso proves that Soul Coughing's
already prodigious funk is fatter and their groove more hypnotic than
ever before, and brings the band a few steps closer to realizing their
dream of being a great dance band.

Spawned in the belly of New York's underground in 1992, Soul
Coughing, ironically, never entertained the thought that someday they
might have commercial potential. The members of this unlikely band of
talented musicians are M. Doughty, vocals and guitar, the avant poet and
founder of the band; Mark De Gli Antonio, keyboard and sampler, who has
his masteršs degree in music composition; Yuval Gabay, drums, whose
history includes fusing traditional Moroccan folk music and rock; and
Sebastian Steinberg, stand up bassist, whose past experience includes
everything from reggae to belly dancing combos. Despite their disparate
backgrounds, one thing that all four members agreed on was that "Soul
Coughing had to have a dark deep low-end and that we had to be as fat as
all these hip hop records." Word spread quickly about this new band,
and within a year their weekly residency at CBGB Gallery had become the
party of choice. "People started dancing," Steinberg says, "once that
was taken care of, anything could happen." And so it did.
