Lawrence University Artist Honored as Outstanding Graduate by UW-Madison

APPLETON, WIS. -- Lawrence University artist Helen Klebesadel has been
named a recipient of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of
Education's 1999 Outstanding Recent Graduate Award for distinguished
achievement and leadership.
A painter specializing in watercolors, Klebesadel was selected for the
award in recognition of her "talent as an outstanding classroom and studio
teacher, impressive accomplishments as an artist and thoughtful mentoring of
women in the arts." The award is presented annually to two graduates who
have received a degree within the past 10 years.
An associate professor of studio art, Klebesadel joined the Lawrence
faculty in 1990. Her paintings have been exhibited throughout the country,
including galleries in Milwaukee, Madison, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia,
San Francisco and San Antonio. Last fall, two of her works were selected
for inclusion in the Art in Embassies Program, which promotes the
accomplishments of America's visual artists. Her two watercolors, "Sacred
Grove" and "Crowrise," will be installed at the official residence of the
U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka.
She served as national president of the Women's Caucus for Art from
1994-96 and led a delegation to China for the 1995 United Nations
Conference on Women.
Klebesadel earned both her bachelor's degree in studio art (1986) and
her master's of fine arts degree (1989) from UW-Madison. She will receive
her award May 8 during the university's alumni weekend program.
