Lawrence University English Professor Receives Maxwell Anderson Award

APPLETON, WIS. -- Peter Fritzell, professor of English and holder of
the Patricia Hamar Boldt Professorship of Liberal Studies at Lawrence, has
been named the recipient of the 1999 Maxwell Anderson award from the
University of North Dakota. The award, given in recognition of
distinguished achievement by an alumnus of the English department, was
presented at the university's recent annual writer's conference.
Fritzell has written widely on nature and the outdoors, including a
twice reprinted essay on famed conservationist and environmental philosopher
Aldo Leopold. His essay "American Wetlands as Cultural Symbol" was recently
cited in a British study of postmodern wetlands.
A 1962 graduate of the University of North Dakota, Fritzell has taught
at Lawrence since 1966.
