Contact: Rick Peterson, Manager of News Services, 414/832-6590 For Immediate Release March 5, 1997 Two Lawrence University Students Among Truman Scholarship Finalists APPLETON, WIS. -- Lawrence University juniors Shelby Bowser, an economics major from Van Dyne, and Catherine Dunham, a Spanish major from Ames, Iowa, have been selected as finalists for the 1997 Truman Scholarships. They were named finalists from more than 700 candidates nominated by 369 colleges and universities. As finalists, Bowser and Dunham will be eligible for one of the possible 65 scholarships that will be awarded later this month. Each scholarship provides up to $30,000 -- $3,000 for the student's senior year and $27,000 for two or three years of graduate study. Established in 1975 as a federal memorial to the nation's 33rd president, the Truman Scholarship Foundation selects scholars on the basis of leadership potential, intellectual ability and the likelihood of "making a difference."
