It's been quite the spring for the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music. For the second time in less than a month, Lawrence musicians have earned first-place honors in a national competition. The Lawrence quintet of seniors Nora Anderson, oboe, senior Suzanne Hickman, clarinet, Peter Kolkay, bassoon, and juniors Elizabeth Cameron, flute, and Jeremiah Frederick, horn, placed first May 3 in the winds competition in the 26th annual Carmel Chamber Music Competition held in Carmel, Calif. The quintet, coached by Lawrence Associate Professor of Music Howard Niblock, performed in a winners concert on May 4 and received $2,500 for its first-place effort. They were one of nine groups, including musicians from Oberlin, Yale and Miami University of Ohio, selected for the competition finals on the basis of an audition tape submitted earlier this year. The Lawrence quintet performed works by Elliott Carter and Paul Taffanel during its 20-minute audition. In April, a Lawrence saxophone quartet finished first in the national Music Teachers National Association competition in Dallas, Texas. Also last month, Lawrence senior Javier Arau was named winner of the national collegiate composition award in Down Beat magazine's annual student music competition and two Lawrence pianists placed first and second in a state piano competition sponsored by Wisconsin Public Radio.
