The social, intellectual and erotic climate of late 18th century French society comes to the Cloak Theatre stage in three performances of the Lawrence University production "Dangerous Liaisons" May 29-31. Each performance begins at 8 p.m. in the Lawrence Music-Drama Center. Based on the French epistolary novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos and set in pre-Revolutionary Paris, the play follows the battle-of-the-sexes "chess match" between two equally unscrupulous rivals -- Valmont, a libertine, and Marquise de Merteuil, a fashionable matron. Turning love into a passionless, emotionless, intellectual activity, they manipulate and destroy the lives of others in their game, only to wind up as the punished victims of their own devious schemings. The production, featuring 10 major characters and period costumes, is directed by Lawrence sophomore Maria Mitsova, who also stars as Marquise de Merteuil. Tickets for "Dangerous Liaisons," at $5 for adults, $2 for senior citizens and students, are available at the Lawrence box office, Brokaw Hall, 115 S. Drew St., Appleton, 12:30-5:30 p.m., Monday-Saturday. For more information, or to charge tickets to Visa/Mastercard, call 414/832-6749.
