Hanson, a 1992 graduate of Stewartville (Minn.) High School, and a senior at Lawrence University wrote the composition as a gift for his nephew, Nathan Jacobson in Brooklyn Center, Minn., who was born in Sept., 1994. The lyrics to the piece were taken from the poem, "Good Night," written by English poet Jane Taylor. The piece is scored for unison treble voices and piano. Professor Richard Bjella, director of choral studies at Lawrence, called it "quite a coup," for Hanson's piece to get published. "It's most unusual for someone to be published in their first attempt, especially by such a prominent publisher like Boosey and Hawkes," said Bjella. "The Doreen Rao series is the most prestigious portion of their choral music series and to be included there is something special. It's a terrific piece and I'm very happy for him." Hanson, a choral/music education major at Lawrence, is currently student- teaching in the Milwaukee suburb of Mequon and is expected to graduate in December.
