From: Rick Peterson Subject: State Superintendent Candidates' Forum To: Peter.J.Gilbert@LAWRENCE.EDU Contact: Rick Peterson, Manager of News Services, 414/832-6590 For Immediate Release January 29, 1997 Lawrence University Hosts Public Forum for State Superintendent Candidates APPLETON, WIS.-- All seven candidates for State Superintendent of Public Instruction are scheduled to participate in a public forum Saturday, Feb. 1 from 7-8 p.m. in Lawrence University's Stansbury Theatre in the Music-Drama Center. The event is free and open to the public. Stewart Purkey, associate professor of education at Lawrence, will moderate the forum. Each candidate will give a one-minute introduction/opening statement and then be allotted one minute to respond to each of seven questions previously submitted to them. Responses will be given in a rotating order among the candidates. Current Superintendent John Benson will be joined at the forum by challengers Linda Cross, Tony Evers, Eugene Hem, James Leonhart, Thomas Mysicka and Gregg Underheim. The field will be reduced to two candidates in a February 18 primary. The candidates forum is sponsored by the League of Women Voters-Appleton, the Lawrence University Department of Education/Mielke Forums on Education and Time- Warner Cable., which will tape the forum for local rebroadcast.
