Contact: Rick Peterson, Manager of News Services, 414/832-6590 For Immediate Release February 12, 1997 The Mysteries of Sleep Discussed in Lawrence University Biology Lecture APPLETON, WIS.-- Some of the annoying problems ththat keep us from enjoying a night of blissful slumber will be discussed by Chicago pulmonologist Dr. Charles Alex in the Lawrence University Recent Advances in Biology Lecture, "When Sleep Hurts," Friday, February 21 at 3 p.m. in Stephenson Hall, Room 201. The event is free and open to the public. In his address, Alex, a 1975 honor graduate of Lawrence, will examine sleep disorders related to breathing abnormalities, ranging from snoring and obstructive sleep apnea to hypoventilation and discuss physiologic approaches to the diagnosis and treatments of these disorders. Alex is director of the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit and the Pulmonary Function Laboratory at Chicago's Hines V.A. Hospital. He also serves as assistant professor of medicine at Loyola University's Stritch School of Medicine. After graduating from Lawrence, Alex earned his medical degree at the University of Illinois-Chicago in 1980.
