For Immediate Release April 30, 1996 Lawrence University Fine Arts Lecture Looks at Study of Romanesque Sculpture APPLETON, WIS. - Marilyn Schmidt, program manager at the Getty Art History Information Program in Santa Monica, Calif., will offer alternatives to the ways in which scholars have traditionally studied Romanesque sculpture in a Lawrence University Fine Arts Colloquium Monday, May 6. Schmidt's lecture/slide presentation entitled, "Of Foliage and Saints and Styles and Time: Reflections on the Study of Romanesque Sculpture," at 4:15 p.m. in the Wriston Art Center Auditorium, is free and open to the public. In her lecture, Schmidt will examine some of the approaches traditionally used in the study of West European sculpture from the Romanesque period (11th and 12th centuries) and some of the problems associated with those approaches. Prior to joining the Getty Art History Information Program in 1985, Schmidt spent six years on the faculty of the University of Miami. She earned her bachelor's degree at Lawrence in 1960 and her Ph.D. in art history at Yale University, In 1995, Schmidt was appointed to the Lawrence University Board of Trustees.
