For Immediate Release January 29, 1996 Causes, Effects of Million Man March Discussed in Lawrence Main Hall Forum APPLETON, WIS. - Award-winning journalist Salim Muwakkil will provide a first-hand perspective of last fall's Million Man March in Washington, D.C., and examine some of the societal reasons that produced the march in a Lawrence University Main Hall Forum Tuesday, Feb. 6. Muwakkil will deliver the address, "The Million Man March: A Case of Crisis and Agency," at 4:30 p.m. in Main Hall Room 109. The event is free and open to the public. In his address, Muwakkil will explore the conditions that existed which allowed black nationalist Louis Farrakhan to bring a million men to Washington, D.C., for the October rally and discuss any changes that have resulted within the black community as a result of the march. He provided live broadcast coverage of the march for the Pacifica News Network. Muwakkil has served as senior editor since 1984 of "In These Times," a biweekly national news journal based in Chicago, and has been a contributing columnist with the Chicago Sun-Times since 1993. He was recently named co-host of "Democracy Now," a radio series that airs on the Pacifica News Network. In addition, he appears frequently as a guest commentator on Black Entertainment Television's "Our Voices" and the Chicago public television program "Inside Politics." A former professor of journalism at Chicago's Columbia College, Muwakkil earned his bachelor's degree in political science in 1973 from Rutgers University.
