For Immediate Release May 13, 1996 Lawrence University Hosts Annual AIDS Candlelight Memorial/Mobilization APPLETON, WIS. - The Lawrence University AIDS Awareness Task Force will host Appleton's observance of the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial and Mobilization Sunday, May 19 at 10 p.m. on the Main Hall Green. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be moved to Riverview Lounge in the Lawrence Memorial Union. Nearly 300 cities in the United States and more than 40 other countries will participant in the annual memorial. The world's largest annual grassroots AIDS event, the candlelight memorial and mobilization began in San Francisco in 1983 and honors the memory of those who have died of AIDS, demonstrates support for people living with HIV and AIDS and mobilizes community involvement in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The candlelight memorial will provide information on locally provided HIV/AIDS services as well as area volunteer opportunities. Participants attending the memorial are encouraged to bring candles and cups to shield the flame. A limited supply of candles and cups will be available at the event for those who can't provide their own. The theme of this year's observance is "AIDS Discrimination Is a Global Epidemic." Discrimination caused by fear, ignorance and misconceptions about AIDS promotes, rather than prevents, the spread of the disease.
