Since his startling advent onto the scene a mere three years ago, Joshua has garnered more critical acclaim and attracted more popular attention than any new jazz artist of the past decade. His Grammy-nominated first album, Joshua Redman, and his follow-up effort, Wish, were both released in 1993, and together have sold approximately 200,000 copies worldwide. Mood Swing, his eagerly anticipated third album, offers further evidence of Redman's ever-expanding talents as a saxophonist, band leader, and composer. Born in Berkeley, California in 1969, Redman demonstrated an early interest in music, experimenting with the piano, guitar, and eventually, the tenor saxophone. With interests in academic areas, Redman attended Harvard in 1987 as a pre-med honors student and was later accepted to the Yale Law School, pursuing music purely as a diversion. Before matriculating at Yale, however, he took a year off to experience the New York music scene. After a short period of immersion in the club scene, Redman entered the Thelonius Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition and was selected as the winner by a distinguished panel consisting of Benny Carter, Jimmy Heath, Jackie McLean, and Branford Marsalis. Since then, RedmanUs career has advanced at a startling pace. Among the musicians with whom he has worked are Elvin Jones, Charlie Haden, Jack DeJohnette, Pat Metheny, Red Rodney, Paul Motian, Roy Hargrove, John Hicks, and Joe Lovano. His recent awards include two 1994 Down Beat Critics Poll awards for Jazz artist of the Year and #1 Tenor Saxophonist, an award he also won in 1993.
