FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 11, 1995 Lawrence Faculty Jazz Ensemble Featured in Concert Extempo, the Lawrence University Faculty Jazz Ensemble, will present a concert Sunday, May 14 at 8 p.m. in Harper Hall of the Music Drama Center. Guest artists Kenia, voice; Jay Ashby, trombone; and Marty Ashby, guitar, will be featured. The event is free and open to the public. Members of the ensemble include Lawrence faculty members Bob Levy, trumpet; Jeff Santaga, saxophone; Nick Keelan, trombone; Ken Schaphorst, piano; Matt Turner, cello; David Stallsmith, bass; and Dane Richeson, drums. The concert will include compositions by Schaphorst, Levy, and Turner. Born in Rio de Janerio, Kenia moved to New York in 1980. She appeared on Claudio Roditi's album Red on Red, and also sang on James Taylor's Only a Dream in Rio. She has released three albums on MCA/Zebra Recordings: Initial Thrill, Distant Horizon, and What You're Looking For. Jay Ashby has been performing as soloist with Bossa Nova Queen Astrud Gilberto for three years, and recently began working with Brazilian pianist/vocalist Tania Maria. Some of his recent recordings include a group project with Paquito d'Riviera, Ralph Moore, and Claudio Roditi entitled Return to Ipanema on Town Crier Records, and another project with Claudio Roditi on Milestone Records. Marty Ashby has performed with Slide Hampton, Claudio Roditi, Kenia, Gerry Niewood, Richie Cole, Louie Bellson, Astrud Gilberto, and Emily Remler. He has recorded recently for both Denon Records and Justice Records and has toured throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan. Ashby is currently a faculty member at Duquesne University.
