FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 25, 1995 Lawrence Cello Ensemble Featured in Concert The Lawrence Cello Ensemble, under the direction of associate professor of music Janet Anthony, will present a recital of recent works by Wisconsin composers Wednesday, May 3 at 8 p.m. in Harper Hall of the Music Drama Center. The event is free and open to the public. Works to be performed include Eagle Feathers (1989), by former Lawrence student and professor John Harmon; Gentle Breezes (1987), by Lawrence faculty member Robert Levy; Hommage to Villa-Lobos, op. 40 (1987), by faculty member Robert Below; Angel Talk (1995), by University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee professor John Downey; and Optionz (1995), by Lawrence Arts Academy Jazz instructor Matt Turner. The concert will also feature a new work by Lawrence Director of Jazz Studies Kenneth Schaphorst entitled Sonata for Eight Cellos (1994), co-commissioned with grants from the Wisconsin String Teachers Association and the Fox Valley Arts Alliance. The Lawrence Cello Ensemble was founded by Janet Anthony in 1984. The group has toured the state of Wisconsin, performing and giving clinics in the public schools as well as formal recitals on community concert series, and has been heard on Wisconsin Public Radio's "Live from the Elvehjem" radio series. The ensemble has had eight works by seven distinguished Wisconsin composers written for it since 1987. Two of these pieces, John Harmon's Eagle Feathers and Robert Below's Homage to Villa-Lobos, have been published by the National Cello Institute and several others are under review for publication.
