Lawrence Dean Named to Board of Music Teachers National Association

APPLETON, WIS. -- Kathleen Murray, dean of the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music, has been elected to a two-year term on the Music Teachers National Association Board of Directors. In addition, she will serve a concurrent term on the MTNA's Foundation Board.

Founded in 1876, the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) is America's oldest professional music association. A nonprofit organization of 24,000 independent and collegiate music teachers, it is committed to furthering the art of music through programs that encourage and support teaching, performance, composition and scholarly research.

The MTNA Foundation, governed by a 13-member Board of Trustees, raises money to provide awards and grants for members and their students.

Murray was named dean of the conservatory in January, 2001, the first woman to hold the position in the more than 100-year history of the conservatory. She first joined the Lawrence conservatory piano department as an instructor in 1986.

She earned the bachelor of music degree summa cum laude from Illinois Wesleyan University, her master's degree at Bowling Green State University and her D.M. in performance and piano pedagogy at Northwestern University.
