Man vs. Mom: LU Geologist Examines Fox Cities Wetland in Science Lecture

APPLETON, WIS. -- A well-known Fox Valley wetland will be the focus of a Lawrence University Science Hall Colloquium examining Mother Nature's never-ending battle with man.

Anthony Hoch, assistant professor of geology at Lawrence, presents, "Cruel Irony Revisited: Natural Geochemical Processes Meet Unnatural Industrial Waste at a 'Reclaimed' Wetland," Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 4:30 p.m. in Science Hall, Room 102. The event is free and open to the public.

Hoch, an aqueous geochemist who studies surface and ground water interactions with minerals, will examine the natural and man-made factors affecting the water quality of a wetland on the north shore of Lake Winnebago. He will discuss the interaction between natural processes, such as contaminant filtering by layers of soil and sand, and the presence of buried industrial alum at the site with the influences of a nearby repository used to store snow laden with road salt during the winter.
