Lawrence University Hosts Free Ska Concert Memorial Weekend

APPLETON, WIS. -- The Madison-based band I Voted for Kodos and Appleton's own The Exhibitionists are among 11 groups that will turn Lawrence University into the ska music capital of Wisconsin Memorial Day weekend.

Lawrence hosts "Skappleton Punkiversity 2001," Saturday, May 26 from 12:30 p.m.-11 p.m. in the amphitheatre of Lawrence's Wriston Art Center. The music festival is free and open to the public. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved inside the adjacent Lawrence Memorial Union.

Joining I Voted for Kodos and The Exhibitionists, both of whom recently opened for Reel Big Fish, in the Skappleton Punkiversity 2001 lineup are Neepoe, Boyscout Dropouts, The Potential Alternates, Mediocre at Best, Fall Back Plan, Introversion, Antifreeze and The Shortbus Kids.

Born in Jamaica in the 1950s, ska is an upbeat, danceable brand of music, faster in tempo than reggae, with an affinity for horns and socially conscious lyrics. It combines the musical influences of calypso, jazz, blues and swing. Many of Bob Marley's earliest recordings were ska versions of standards and popular rock and roll songs.
