Lawrence University Musicians Win Regional Music Competition
APPLETON, WIS. -- For the second time in the last four years, a Lawrence University saxophone quartet earned first-place honors in the East Central Division of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) collegiate chamber music competition held recently at Indiana University.
Members of the winning quartet were seniors Allen Cordingly, Los Lunas, N.M., baritone sax, and Stephen Rodriquez, Hillsboro, Ore., alto sax, and juniors Tony Bell, Waukesha, soprano sax, and Casey Schmidt, Little Falls, Minn., tenor sax. The quartet is coached by Marco Albonetti, lecturer in music. Each of the quartet members are students of Professor of Music Steven Jordheim's saxophone studio.
The East Central Division competition featured group winners of previously held state competitions in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. The Lawrence quartet advances to the national competition March 24-28 in Washington, D.C., where it will be one of seven regional winners competing for a $3,000 first-place prize.
