Architectural Styles of Ancient Roman Villa Subject of LU Archaeological
Lecture

APPLETON, WIS. -- The project director overseeing the excavation of
an ancient Roman villa discusses her most recent findings Monday, Oct.
30 in a Archaeological Institute of America lecture at Lawrence
University.
Stephanie Maloney, professor of art history at the University of
Louisville, presents the slide-illustrated lecture, ³Builders and
Building Programs at the Roman Villa of Torre de Palma, Portugal,² at
7:30 p.m. in Lawrence¹s Wriston Art Center auditorium. An informal
reception will follow the address, which is free and open to the public.
Since 1983, Maloney has directed a re-excavation of the Portugese
site, which includes several residences, bath complexes, granaries, a
forge and an early Christian basicilica and baptistery. Although
occupied beginning in the first century A.D., the entire complex was
built over a span of 500 years. Maloney will discuss the expansion of
the villa and the different stylistic characteristics of the various
builders of the complex.
