Lawrence Archaeological Lecture Examines Evidence of Ancient Gender Stereotyping

APPLETON, WIS. -- Some of the earliest forms of human gender stereotyping will be the focus of an Archaeological Institute of America lecture at Lawrence University.

Rosemary Joyce, associate professor of anthropology at the University of California-Berkeley, presents the slide-illustrated lecture, "In the Beginning: Men and Women in Mesoamerica's Earliest Towns," Monday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Lawrence's Wriston Art Center auditorium. An informal reception will follow the address, which is free and open to the public.

Through the examination of hand-modeled figurines discovered at settlements dating from 1500 B.C .in Mexico and Honduras, Joyce will explain the different ways men and women were represented as ideals of behavior. She also will discuss how those differences affected their respective participation in everyday activities and political systems.
