Lawrence University Salutes Nation's First International Education Week
APPLETON, WIS. -- Lawrence University will help commemorate the
nation's first International Education Week celebration by hosting a
series of special events.
U. S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley, in conjunction with the
U.S. State Department, has designated Nov. 12-18 as International
Education Week to "recognize the value of gaining a broad understanding
of the cultures, languages and governments of other nations." The week
grew out of a directive earlier this year from President Clinton to
increase support for and awareness of international eduation and the
role it plays in building and strengthening mutual understanding among
peoples around the world.
"This is an opportunity for Lawrence to highlight its own
long-standing commitment to internationalism in a variety of ways," said
Scott Fuller, Lawrence's international student advisor. "It will be a
week devoted to examining all the benefits that come from international
education."
Lawrence kicks off its salute to internationalism Sunday, Nov. 12
with a "get acquainted" potluck dinner at 6 p.m. in the International
House for area families who serve as host families for Lawrence
international students. Thirty area families currently serve as
"community hosts" for some of Lawrence's 102 foreign students, providing
occasional family meals, shopping trips and other social activities for
them. Anyone interested in becoming a host family can call 832-6531 for
more information.
A Careers Abroad expo will be held in the International House on
Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 8 p.m. to provide information on pursuing jobs in
foreign countries, study abroad programs and job search tips for
international students interested in careers in the U.S.
International cinema will be featured Wednesday, Nov. 15 with the
presentation of two foreign films -- "The Inheritors" from Germany and
"The Emperor and the Assassin" from China -- in the Wriston Art Center
auditorium. Both films will be shown with subtitles, beginning at 8
p.m.
Faculty from the Lawrence government department as well as several
student leaders from the College Republicans and the Young Democrats
will close out the week's activities Thursday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. in the
International House with a round-table discussion on foreign policy
issues facing the new presidential administration.
All International Education Week events are free and open to the
public.
