Visiting Scholar Discusses Challenges Facing Women in Russia in Lawrence Lecture

APPLETON, WIS. -- Faina Belozyorova, a visiting scholar from Appleton's sister city of Kurgan, Russia, will discuss gender-related and domestic violence issues facing women in contemporary Russia in an address at Lawrence University.

Belozyorova delivers the address, "Old Challenges to Women in the New Russia," Monday, Nov. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wriston Art Center Auditorium. The lecture, co-sponsored by the Lawrence Gender Studies Program and Harbor House Domestic Abuse Programs, is free and open to the public.

In her address, Belozyorova will share highlights from a conference she organized earlier this year in Kurgan. The two-day, first-of-its-kind conference -- "Women's Problems on the Eve of the 21st Century" -- focused on gender knowledge and problems related to domestic abuse.

An associate professor at Kurgan State University, Belozyorova is spending the 2000-2001 academic year as a visiting professor in Lawrence's Russian department.
