Integrating Art and Geology: Lawrence University Science Hall Atrium Hosts Photography Exhibit

APPLETON, WIS. -- An opening reception for an exhibition featuring the photography of Appleton businessman Rudy Cherkasky will be held Monday, March 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the atrium of Lawrence University's Science Hall.

Integrating art and geology, the exhibition features photographs Cherkasky shot in May, 2000 of the "slot canyons" of Antelope Canyon in northeast Ariz. The labyrinth of deep, narrow canyons of sandstone, carved by flash floods over the centuries, are recorded by Cherkasky's camera.as sensuous, mystical scenes, bathed in intriguing combinations of direct, diffused and refracted light. Arizona's slot canyons were virtually unknown until they were "discovered" in 1931 by a young Navajo girl herding sheep.

Cherkasky earned an Eastman Kodak National Award for outstanding sport photography while still in high school. His photography has been featured in galleries throughout northeast Wisconsin, including the Coventry Gallery in Appleton, Hardy Gallery in Door County, Artistree Gallery in Menasha, the Appleton Art Center, and the Secura Art Show.

The photographs, which Cherkasky has donated to the Lawrence geology department, will remain on display in the Science Hall atrium through the end of June.
