Lawrence University Department of Mathematics Activities

Departmental Activities Outside the Classroom

(check out the full gallery)

Each week, the department hosts a Math Tea where faculty and students get together to talk informally over tea and homemade cookies. Occasionally, these Teas feature informal student presentations on independent-study work, summer research and internship experiences, or graduate school information.

Another departmental social event is the annual Math Picnic. The picnic is organized by the students and faculty in the MATH 300 (Foundations of Analysis) course. It’s held outside in the spring sunshine, where students and faculty mingle, throw Frisbees, and eat cook-out fare.

Students within the mathematics-computer science major are quite active outside the classroom. Lawrence has a Computer Science Club and it annually sends two teams of students to a programming competition.
