WS_FTP

WS_FTP - is a software used by window users. It is a method of transferring files over the Internet, in other words, to copy a file from one computer to another at very fast speeds. This normally requires either a user id on both systems or a special configuration set up by the system administrator(s).

Starting Ws_FTP

  1. Locate the FTP program on your Lawrence-owned computer. Click Start-Programs-Internet Tools, WS_FTP.
  2. The "Session Properties" window will open.
  3. From the General tab, enter the following:

    For access to the Lawrence web from campus:
     

    • In the "Host Name/Address:" field, type: www.lawrence.edu
    • Under "Host Type:" select automatic detect
    • In the "User ID:" field, type your username.
    • In the "Password:" field, type your network password.

  4. For access to the campus share when connected through the tunnel:

For access to the Lawrence web from off campus when connected through the tunnel:

    In the "Host Name/Address:" field, type: intweb.lawrence.edu

    Under "Host Type:" select automatic detect

    In the "User ID:" field, type your username.

    In the "Password:" field, type your network password.

For access to ELDA/Henry (network personal space) from on or off campus :

    In the "Host Name/Address:" field, type: elda.lawrence.edu or henry.lawrence.edu

    Under "Host Type:" select Automatic detect

    In the "User ID:" field, type your username.

    In the "Password:" field, type your network password.

  1. Move to the Startup tab.
  2. In the Initial Remote Site Folder enter the following setting:
    • To access personal web space enter:
      • Faculty members: fast/username
      • Staff members: fast/username
      • Students: stu/username
    • To access department web files enter: dept/department_name (no spaces)
    • To access student organization's web files enter: sorg/student_organization_name (no spaces)
  3. In the Initial Local Directory field, type the name of the starting directory for the Local PC, wherever you have stored the files you want to transfer. For example, if you are a student and want to upload files from your network space, type in x:\username
  4. Click OK.

Transfering a File (Upload/Download)

The WS_FTP window opens. The Local System on left side allows you to choose the file you wish to transfer to the web. Double-Click on the correct drive and navigate to your file. Click on the file to select it and then click the right-pointing arrow button to publish the file to your website.

Changing your local directory (left side of the screen)

Use the ChgDir button to type the name of the directory you want or in the list box, double-click on the directory you want.

Changing your remote directory (right side of the screen)

Use the ChgDir button to type the name of the directory you want or in the list box, double-click on the directory you want.

Transferring a file

  1. Click on the name of the file you want to transfer.

  2. Click on either the ASCII (text, including HTML documents) or Binary (graphic files) button to select file format.

  3. Click on the right arrow to Send (upload) a file.

  4. Click on the left arrow to Retrieve (download) a file.

Stopping a Transfer

If you need to stop the transfer (either during uploading or downloading), press the Cancel button.

Getting Help

Click on the Help button at the bottom of the window.

Exiting WS_FTP

  1. Click on the Close button at the bottom of the window.
  2. Click on the Exit button at the bottom of the window.
