Handheld Support Policy

Policy Statement

At the current time, Lawrence University has determined that it will not purchase handheld devices for members of our faculty or staff. However, should faculty or staff members choose to purchase their own devices, the Information Technology Services department will provide installation support within the following parameters:

Information Technology Services will install and support the basic synchronization software that comes with any handheld device, provided the software is compatible with our current desktop operating system. The owner must supply Information Technology Services support personnel with the appropriate (original) software.

Because of the variety of devices available, installation does not necessarily guarantee long-term support for any particular device or software. Users should be aware that Lawrence will not forego any desktop operating system upgrades due to incompatibility issues with handheld device software. If Lawrence chooses to upgrade a university-owned desktop and that upgrade causes some handheld synchronization software not to function, it is the responsibility of the owners of the devices to upgrade their devices and software.

All other software applications supporting handheld devices, beyond the basic synchronization programs that come with those devices, will not be supported and should not be installed on Lawrence-owned computers.

Hardware support of personally owned handheld devices is not supported.

Procedures

It is suggested that before purchasing personal handheld hardware or software for use in the Lawrence University workplace, users should contact Information Technology Services for general advice and assistance in the purchase of those devices.  For assistance with software installation, users should contact the Information Technology Services Helpdesk.
