There are currently two options for accessing your Lawrence e-mail account from off-campus.
Option 1: Personal Computer E-Mail Client
Before you can configure your computer for off campus e-mail access, you will need an active Internet connection. To gain access to your Lawrence e-mail, you will need to configure the outgoing mail (SMTP) server and the incoming mail server in your e-mail client. Shown below are the settings you need to enter in order to receive Lawrence e-mail. These settings are the same for any IMAP e-mail client.
Configuration settings for off-campus IMAP e-mail client:
Mail Server Username: enter the user name for your LU accounts
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: mailhub.lawrence.edu
Outgoing Server Port: 25 or 465
(Some ISPs block certain ports; if you have trouble with 25, try 465)
Outgoing Username: enter the user name for your LU accounts
Incoming Mail Server: mailhub.lawrence.edu
Important: Lawrence allows authenticated users to access our SMTP server to send email. You must configure your email client to authenticate with your Lawrence username and password for both incoming and outgoing messages. In addition, you may want to enable SSL on the SMTP connection for added security.
Option 2: WebMail
Webmail is Lawrence University's web-based e-mail client. Webmail allows users to access their Lawrence e-mail from any computer (on or off-campus) with an active Internet connection and functioning web browser. Webmail is convenient because it does not require you to reconfigure your personal e-mail client. To access Webmail:

There are currently two options for accessing your off-campus e-mail accounts
from
on-campus.
Option 1: Personal Computer connected to the Lawrence network
Before you can configure your computer to access an off-campus e-mail account,
you will need the following:
To gain access to your remote e-mail account, you will need to configure the incoming mail server and the outgoing (SMTP) mail server in your e-mail client. Shown below are the settings you need to enter in order to receive Lawrence e-mail. These settings are the same for any IMAP e-mail client.
The settings for off campus IMAP e-mail client must be as followers:
Mail Server Username: Enter the username given to you by your mail provider.
Incoming Mail Server: The name of the remote mail server; select either POP or IMAP protocol, as
directed by your provider.
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: mailhub.lawrence.edu
Important: You will need to contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) directly to receive the address for the incoming mail server. Even if your mail server offers an authenticated service for outbound e-mail (SMTP), or encrypted service (TLS, sometimes shown as SSL), you will have to use Lawrence's mail server for outgoing messages. On-campus connection attempts to outside SMTP servers are blocked due to virus/worm activity.
Option 2: Web Interface
If you normally use a web browser to read e-mail from an off-campus service such as Hotmail or Yahoo, you may use that service in exactly the same manner as you would from any other computer, whether on- or off-campus.
Lawrence has an LDAP server for e-mail address auto-completion. Once configured, you can type in the first few letters of any name or e-mail address on campus, and the LDAP server will fill in the rest.
LDAP Server: whitepages.lawrence.edu
Search Base: ou=campus,dc=lawrence,dc=edu
Port: 389
Authentication is not required for on-campus access, but if you are off campus, you will need to enter a username and password to use the Lawrence LDAP server.
Lawrence has combined the e-mail password with it's network password. Your network password is used to log on to e-mail, the mailhub.lawrence.edu server. This password may be changed as often as you like by going to https://viking.lawrence.edu/ and choosing "Manage your network account." By default, you will be required to change your password once every year. For more details, see Rules for Passwords.
Every account, whether faculty or staff, is allotted a finite amount of file storage space on the mailhub server. The initial quota is sufficient generally to meet the demands of most users. Due to the nature of their projects, work requirements, or research, some users may exhaust their disk quota allocation. In these instances, the user may request an increase in quota by contacting the HelpDesk. Requests will be considered and additional quota granted as appropriate. Before requesting additional quota, be sure to delete old, unneeded, and obsolete e-mails. Be sure to empty your trash and sent folders as well. If you still do not have enough disk space to meet your needs, then make the request. For instructions on checking your quota (an option available in Webmail) click here.
The Lawrence mail server uses the IMAP protocol for e-mail access from personal computers. E-mail clients using POP services will not work on our network. IMAP offers several advantages over POP e-mail. Most importantly, IMAP allows you to create and manage folders of e-mail messages on the server, unlike POP which accumulates all e-mail in one folder (usually called the inbox). While POP e-mail does allow you to create and utilize folders, they must be located on a local hard drive. Since the majority of users on campus access e-mail from multiple locations, the POP e-mail system is not desirable.
