Electronic Portfolio Web Site Setup

1. Initial Setup – Windows direction

  • The Windows directions below walk you through copying the eport template folder to your personal network area and creating an "eport" folder in your personal web space.
  1. Login to a Windows computer
  2. Locate the folder named "eport template" in C:\Temp\ on your computer and copy it to your "My Documents" folder.
  3. Click Start->Programs->Internet Tools->WS_FTP95 LE
  4. Click the "General" tab and enter the following settings, leaving all other fields blank:
    • Host Name/Address: www.lawrence.edu
    • Host Type: Automatic detect
    • User ID: enter your network username; for example, smithj
    • Password: enter your password (do not hit Enter yet!)
  5. Click the "Startup" tab at the top of the window and type:
    • Initial Remote Site Folder: /stu/USERNAME/ as in /stu/smithj/
  6. Click the OK button
  7. Click the MkDir button located on the far right-hand side
  8. Type eport and then click OK. Open the folder marked "eport."
  9. Click the MkDir button located on the far right-hand side
  10. Type DEPT (where DEPT equals the 3-4 character department code used by the Registrar, such as "span" for Spanish) and then click OK.
  11. Exit the WS_FTP application

1. Initial Setup — Mac directions

  • The Mac directions below walk you through copying the eport template folder to your personal network area and creating an "eport" folder in your personal web space.
  1. Login to a Mac computer
  2. Locate the folder named "eport template" on the "Temp" folder on the hard drive and copy it to your "My Documents" folder in your network space.
  3. Open the "Fetch" application in the "Applications" (OSX) folder on the hard drive.
  4. Enter the following settings:
    • Host: www.lawrence.edu
    • User ID: enter your network username; for example, smithj
    • Password: enter your password (do not hit Enter yet!)
  5. If necessary, click the small triangle in the lower left to expand the window and type:
    • Initial directory: /stu/USERNAME/ as in /stu/smithj/
  6. Click the OK button.
  7. Select "Create New Directory" from the "Directories" menu
  8. Type eport and then click OK. Open the folder marked "eport."
  9. Select "Create New Directory" from the "Directories" menu
  10. Type DEPT (where DEPT equals the 3-4 character department code used by the Registrar, such as "span" for Spanish) and then click OK. Quit the Fetch application.

2. Dreamweaver Site Setup (you must do these steps once per computer)

  • The directions below walk you through defining your Dreamweaver electronic portfolio web site. Note that the Dreamweaver site settings are stored on the computer and not in your network space, so whenever you go to a lab to work on your web site, you will need to redo these steps unless you can work on a computer where you've previously defined them.
  1. Open the Dreamweaver application
  2. Select Site->New Site
  3. If necessary, click the Advanced tab at the top of the window
  4. Type your name into the Site Name field as in John Smith's eport
  5. Click on the small folder icon to the right of "Local Root Folder"
  6. Navigate to the "eport template" folder you copied into "My Documents" in step 2 above
  7. For Mac, click once on the "eport template" folder and then click Choose; for Windows, open the folder and then click Select
  8. Fill in the "HTTP Address" field with: http://www.lawrence.edu/stu/USERNAME/eport/DEPT/ substituting your username and the 3-4 character department code
  9. Click on the Remote Info category on the left
  10. Select FTP next to Access
  11. Fill in the "FTP Host" with www.lawrence.edu
  12. Fill in the "Host Directory" with /stu/USERNAME/eport/DEPT/ substituting your username and the 3-4 character department code as in /stu/smithj/eport/span/
  13. Type your username next to Login
  14. Leave the Password field blank!
  15. Click OK

3. Test the Settings

  1. If you do not see your site open in Dreamweaver: on the Mac select Site->Open Site->your site name; on Windows, select Window->Site.
  2. Click on the uppermost folder in the site window (on the "Local Files" side)
  3. Select Site->Put to upload everything to the web server
  4. Click Yes when it asks you if you want to upload the entire site
  5. If there is an error, make sure your username and password have been entered correctly. To make a change to the settings, select Site->Edit Site.
  6. If the upload appeared to work correctly, open Internet Explorer or Netscape and visit the URL to your eport web site (substitute your username and your department code): http://www.lawrence.edu/stu/USERNAME/eport/DEPT/
