Creating a DVD using iMovie 3 and iDVD 3

IMPORT your video project from tape

  • See the iMovie handout for details on importing and editing video
  • Login to one of the 17-inch iMacs with the special account supplied in class
  • Hook the camera up to a computer; create a new iMovie project (save it on the Desktop); and import your entire completed video project from MiniDV tape.
  • Drag the imported clips (in sequence) into the timeline.

Create chapter markers

  • Click the iDVD button near the bottom right-hand corner of the iMovie window.
  • Cue your video project to a time where you would like a chapter marker to be created.
  • Click the "Add Chapter" button.
  • Give the marker a name, such as "Week 7" or "Section 15", etc.
  • Repeat the above steps to create the remaining chapter markers.
  • Save your iMovie project by selecting File->Save.

Create the iDVD project

  • Click the "Create iDVD Project" button near the bottom right-hand corner of the iMovie window. Be patient. Your project will eventually open up in iDVD.

Customizing your iDVD project

  • Your iMovie project opens up with the default menu theme.
  • Click the "Customize" button in the lower-left corner of iDVD
  • Scroll the list to select a different theme.
  • NOTE: if you switch to a different theme, it only affects the current "screen" of your DVD's menu. If you have multiple screens: click the Preview button, use the remote to advance to a different screen, click Preview again, and then repeat steps 2-3 above.

To burn your DVD

  • First, click the "Preview" button and test drive your project to make sure it is OK.
  • Click the "Burn"button again; insert your DVD and close the tray. It will probably take a while to burn.

CLEANUP!!!

  • Delete your iMovie and iDVD projects (auto-saved in /Users/video/Documents) from the computer by dragging them to the Trash (bottom-right) and selecting "Empty Trash" from the Finder menu.
