Importing quiz questions
- Moodle allows you to import questions from a plain text file (I'd recommend that you use NotePad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac) rather than MS Word for this). This lets you quickly and easily type up your quiz questions and answers and then import them into Moodle in one step.
- The documents below explains the way you need to format your questions and answers
- Importing quiz questions: this is the online help for Moodle that explains the different file formats you can use for importing quiz questions.
- The GIFT format: this is one of the more flexible formats for importing quiz questions. It supports multiple choice, short answer, true/false, matching, and numerical types.

Creating an audio-based quiz in Moodle
- If you are using a Mac computer, it is recommended that you use the Firefox web browser to do this exercise since it provides an editing toolbar that you will need. Firefox can be downloaded from http://www.firefox.com/
- Create your mp3 file. Note that the name of the mp3 file (as well as any metadata tags) could possibly provide answers. Strip out this information with iTunes if necessary.
- Upload your mp3 file to Moodle using the "Files" link under "Administration."
- Add a Quiz activity.
- Fill out the desired parameters and click "Continue" at the bottom. If your Quiz will contain one audio file and several questions, make certain that "Shuffle Questions" is not selected.
- Select or create a "Category" for your Quiz.
- Create a new "Description" question.
- In the body of the question, type something like "Listen to this audio file and answer the questions below."
- Select the text you want to become the link to the mp3, and click the "Insert Web Link" button on the editing toolbar (circled in red below).
- Click the "Browse" button at the bottom, select your mp3 file, and click OK.
- Add other questions as desired.
- Check the box to the left of the questions you want to add and click the "<< Add selected to quiz" button.
- Click the "Save this whole quiz" button.
- You should see something that looks like this:
