Reusing a Moodle course

  • FACULTY -- If you will be teaching a course that you have previously taught using Moodle, you have the option to reuse all of your Moodle course content. This can be accomplished in one of two ways, outlined below. If you want to archive a copy of your old course with all student data, choose option B. If you do not wish to keep a copy of the course, but instead just want to update the course content, choose option A.

A. Reuse the same site

  • NOTE -- This option will remove all student data from your course. We recommend that you first Backup your site by clicking on the "Backup" link under the Administration section.
  1. open Moodle and navigate to your course
  2. click on the "Settings" link under the Administration section
  3. change the values next to "Full name" and "Short name" to indicate the correct term (eg, change "F05" to "W06")
  4. adjust the value next to "Course start date" (set to the Sunday of the first week of classes)
  5. if necessary, adjust the value next to "Number of weeks/topics" (12 for fall term, 11 for winter/spring)
  6. click "Save changes" at the bottom of the window
  7. click the "Reset" link under the Administration section
  8. follow the onscreen instructions

B. Import your course data into a new course

  1. fill out the online form to request that a new course be set up for you
  2. when the course has been set up, open Moodle and navigate to the new course
  3. click on the "Import course data" link under the Administration section
  4. next to "Courses I have taught" select the course you want to import data from, then click the "Use this course" button on the right side.
  5. follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process
