To make an audio CD from a digital video tape
- Attach the camera to the computer with the Firewire cable.
- Turn the camera to VTR mode.
- Open iMovie
- Rewind the tape if necessary, and then start playing the tape
from the camera.
- When you get close to the point where you want to start
recording, press the Import button in iMovie.
- Press the Import button again to stop capturing.
- Turn the camera off.
- At the lower left of the playback window, make sure the button
is switched from Capture mode (DV icon) to the Edit mode (film
icon).
- Drag your clip from the Library and into the Timeline.
- Click on the "clock" icon at the far left of the Timeline.
- If you need to delete from the beginning or end of the segment
you captured:
- position the playback head to the point where you want to make
a cut.
- select Edit -> Split Video Clip at
Playhead
- click underneath the video clip to deselect all clips
- click on the segment you want to delete. It should turn
yellow.
- hit the Delete or backspace key. If you make a mistake, select
Edit->Undo.
- Select Edit->Select All
- Select Advanced->Extract Audio. You now have
separate tracks for the audio and the video in the Timeline.
- Click on the video track segments in the Timeline and delete
them. You should now only have (orange) clips in the audio
track.
- Play the movie once from beginning to end to make sure
it sounds right.
- Select File->Export Movie…
- Select "To QuickTime" in the Export popup
menu.
- Next to Formats, drag down to "Expert"
Click on the Settings button on the right-hand side and
fill it in as shown at right:
- Click OK, then OK, then Export. Name and
Save the file.
- Quit iMovie and open iTunes.
- Make a new Playlist by clicking on the + sign at the
bottom of the window. Name the playlist and click on it to select
it.
- Drag the file you saved in step 20 into your new playlist.
- Select Edit->Preferences, click the "CD Burning" tab
and make sure that "Audio CD" is selected. Click OK.
- Click on the Burn CD button in the upper right corner of
iTunes and follow the prompts.
