This lecture on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, delivered at Lawrence University on January 6, 1999, was designed for students and faculty in the college's Freshman Studies program. Freshman Studies, a multidisciplinary introduction to the liberal arts, has been the cornerstone of the Lawrence curriculum for over fifty years. The lecturer, Bertrand Goldgar, is Professor of English and the John N. Bergstrom Professor of Humanities. He's a widely-recognized expert on 18th-century England and has received the Lawrence University Award for Excellence in Teaching.
